Net-Billing Solar System

The new era of solar energy. With Net Billing, every kilowatt-hour you produce has value.

You consume your own energy first and sell the surplus back to the grid.

What is Net Billing?

Net Billing is gradually replacing Net Metering in Cyprus. With this system:

  • You use the energy you generate directly in your home or business.

  • Any excess energy is sold to the EAC grid at a lower price.

  • When you need power from the grid, you buy at a higher price.

💡 This means the more energy you self-consume, the faster your system pays back.

Adding a battery allows you to store your excess energy instead of selling it cheaply. Later, you can use it when your demand is higher or during the evening, avoiding expensive grid electricity. This increases your self-consumption, maximizes savings, and provides backup power during outages.

Advantages

  • Current and future policy of Cyprus.

  • You earn money for surplus energy exported.

  • Encourages higher self-consumption (better with battery).

  • Transparent separation between consumption and export.

Disadvantages

  • Buy electricity at high retail (~€0.30/kWh), sell at low wholesale (~€0.10/kWh).

  • Without battery, ROI is slower than Net Metering.

  • Requires careful system sizing to maximize benefits.

 FAQs

  • The EAC (Electricity Authority of Cyprus) buys excess electricity from solar systems at approximately €0.11/kWh under the new Net Billing scheme.

  • Electricity purchased from the grid is charged at a higher retail rate, typically between €0.25 – €0.32 / kWh depending on time and usage.

  • Not mandatory, but strongly recommended. Without a battery, any excess energy not consumed immediately is sold to the grid at the lower €0.11/kWh rate. A battery lets you use that stored energy later instead of buying at ~€0.25–€0.32/kWh.

  • Yes, in most cases you can upgrade later with a hybrid inverter and battery, to maximize your self-consumption and savings under Net Billing.

  • Most residential systems are installed within 1–2 days, plus inspection and connection by EAC.

  • Yes. The Cyprus government often offers subsidy schemes for solar and battery storage. Our team can guide you through the application process.

  • With a battery + hybrid inverter, your home can stay powered even if the EAC grid goes down. Without a battery, your system shuts down for safety.

  • Modern lithium batteries typically last 10–15 years (6,000+ cycles) with warranties from 5 to 10 years depending on the brand.
